A Devotional Walk with Forgiveness by Judith Ingram
Sometimes relationships hurt. Friends disappoint us; loved ones betray our trust. People violate our rights, and we want justice, an apology, compensation. We want the guilty exposed and our suffering acknowledged. Sometimes we want pure, cold revenge.
What we want, however, isn’t always what we need. A Devotional Walk with Forgiveness offers God’s healing solution to relationship hurts. The book is a five-week exploration of what it means to forgive, why we all need it, and how we can begin to practice it. Through daily Bible readings, thoughtful essays, and challenging questions, forgiveness reveals itself as God’s remedy for broken hearts and damaged relationships. Find out why families hurt each other; consider whether we can forgive unrepentant offenders; discover what conflict can teach us about ourselves. Learn how forgiveness can help you to work through the pain of your deepest wounds and surrender your bitter heart to the comfort and nurture of God’s love for you.

I have never read such a good and thorough inspection of forgiveness that also guides the reader to continually grow in spiritual fitness for power to overcome. This Devotional Walk lasts long enough that early reluctance to address forgiveness needs will be overcome by the time the Walker concludes the five weeks. The assessments allow thorough and prayerful inspection of wounded relationships, and they woo the Walker to personal response before God. This book makes a very strong contribution to God’s people. — Dr. Scott Farmer, Senior Pastor, Community Presbyterian Church, Danville, California

Having worked with hundreds of people in my capacity as a counseling psychologist, I have seen the destructive effects of unforgiveness. Judith Ingram does not offer a panacea, she presents a practical, day-by-day, step-by-step program to make forgiveness a lifestyle. Forgiveness is counter-intuitive to our natural inclinations. And yet the Bible constantly and consistently calls us to this life. Forgiveness also is a key building block to spiritual and mental health. Judith’s instructions, lifted directly from Scripture, are not easy to accomplish, especially for those who have been significantly betrayed. But for those of us who have experienced God’s forgiveness, in all of its radical implications, her instructions are the only authentic path to pursue so that “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” — Dr. James Osterhaus, psychologist, professor, author of Family Ties Don’t Have to Bind and Questions Couples Ask Behind Closed Doors

A Devotional Walk with Forgiveness is a thorough, practical treatment of forgiveness. I appreciated Judy’s approach in seeing forgiveness as a daily spiritual exercise that keeps us fit in our relationship with God and with those persons God has placed around us. Often times it is easy to treat a subject like this on a theoretical level, but not provide the practical recommendations needed to make forgiveness real in our lives. Thanks, Judy, for your desire to help the church practice this very important teaching of Christ Jesus. — Rev. Daniel R. Siems, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church of Galesburg, Illionois

Forgiveness is at the heart of the Christian faith. On the cross Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” We are taught to confess our sins in order to obtain divine forgiveness. Yet, most of us are not good at forgiving others for the hurts they have inflicted upon us. Our lack of forgiveness poisons our souls and hinders relationships. While books on the topic abound, little attention is given to the “how to” of forgiveness. This “how to” is Judith Ingram’s valuable contribution in A Devotional Walk with Forgiveness. Adopting the health fitness “workout” metaphor, we are guided on a five-week interactive daily exercise program of spiritual fitness focused upon incorporating forgiveness into our spiritual lives as a consistent, ongoing practice. — Dr. M. James Sawyer, Th.M., Director of Sacred Saga Ministries, professor, author of The Survivor’s Guide to Theology, co-author of Reinventing Jesus with J. Ed Komoszewski and Daniel B. Wallace, and co-editor of Who’s Afraid of the Holy Spirit?
